One of the oral antibiotics used for the treatment of acne are drugs known collectively as tetracyclines. These drugs are considered the main oral treatment in the fight against a severe acne outbreak and are the main drugs of choice when dealing with acne of a moderate to severe nature.

They work by inhibiting the growth of P. acnes by attacking the bacteria found in the sebaceous glands. They do not actually kill the bacteria but rather inhibit the growth and have a further benefit in that they provide an anti-inflammatory action. This makes it an important feature of the drug in the treatment of patients with pustules and papules.

You can find tetracycline commonly in three different types: generic tetracycline, Minocycline or Doxycycline.

While improvement of acne is noticeable in most cases in a matter of weeks in people using teracylcines there are some things that should be known about using the drugs. Firstly, side effects are considered low risk from using tetracycline, but they do exist.

A main side effect to using tetracycline is that there is staining to the teeth of children. There are also risks to the bones and teeth of unborn babies and nursing children. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding you should not take these drugs.

Tetracyclines may also stain the teeth of older patients for a temporary period of time and this is more likely to be the case for people wearing braces. It is even more important to practice good dental hygiene whilst taking tetracycline.

Other side effects that may be experienced when using tetracycline may include abdominal upset, rashes, a greater susceptibility to sunburn. In rare cases reactions to taking tetracycline may include hives or other hypersensitivity rashes, severe headaches or drug-induced hepatitis.

The common starting doses of the various tetracycline treatments may be as follows:

Plain Tetracycline which may be available in one of the following brand names – Achromycin or Sumycin – they can be taken in capsule, tablet or liquid form and the dosage is 250 or 500 mg twice a day.

Minocycline may be available known as – Minocin, Dynacin or Vectrin – and may be taken in capsule, tablet or oral suspension form depending on the brand you’re taking. The dosage you might be looking at is 50 or 100 mg twice a day.

Doxycycline may be available known by the brand names – Doxycycline, Periostat or Adoxa – and may be taken in capsule or tablet form a dosage of around 75 mg twice a day for Doxycycline or Adoxa is common while 20 mg twice a day is what you would expect for Periostat.

While a tetracycline acne treatment is effective in producing results in the fight against acne. It should result in the pustules and papules beginning to disappear and prevent new ones from popping up.

The most commonly accepted treatment for acne is to use a traditional over the counter acne treatment or, if the condition is too severe, to get some kind of prescribed acne treatment from the doctor. But there is another kind of acne treatment that is also available to help you cure acne. It’s herbal acne treatment and it works.

In fact, most of the brand name acne creams, lotions and gels that are available over the counter contain some kind of herbal ingredients as well as the accepted (and FDA-approved) active ingredients. There are many powerful herbs containing antiseptic and/or anti-bacterial qualities. The only problem with using or concocting your own herbal remedy for acne is the unknown factor of the dosages that are safe or most effective.

One of the most effective herbal treatments for acne is the use of tea tree oil as a topical treatment. Tea tree oil has tremendous anti-microbial properties that will kill the bacteria responsible for acne. The oil is actually very effective for many skin complaints from itchiness to burns and infections. The leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia contains a constituent called terpinoids which have antiseptic and antifungal properties.

There is one warning that goes with the valuable properties of tea tree oil and that is that using too much will cause the skin to become very dry and irritated and it will begin to scale and peel. That being said it is a much gentler option than using an acne treatment containing benzoyl peroxide which will have the same side-effects only to a greater degree.

Green tea extract is another effective herbal acne remedy, not so much by drinking the tea itself but by topically applying a green tea extract to the acne. Green tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities and it inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which converts testosterone into the subaceous gland-stimulating hormone, DHT which can help reduce sebum production in acne sufferers.

Red clover is a popular acne treatment taken orally as a herbal supplement. It is said that red clover is a blood cleanser and has been used for years as a means of relieving skin complaints including the effects of acne. It has also been used externally as a topical treatment of acne too. You will often see red clover mentioned as one of the ingredients in various over the counter acne treatments.

You may also hear of many other herbs that can be used to cleanse and dry out the skin or herbs with anti-bacterial properties. Heartsease (wild pansy) is said to have flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Burdock root is another known blood cleanser that also helps to regulate your hormone balance. Burdock also helps the liver, kidneys and bowel which will help with clearing up related acne conditions.

It is important to remember that the information displayed on this page is for information only and is not intended as advice. Herbal therapy does not come under FDA-approval and so there is no guarantee that the substances discussed here will help clear up acne or will have unforeseen detrimental affects on your particular condition.

New herbal remedies for acne are being released every week, some of them have a basis for the belief that they may work while others are pure bunk. It is up to the individual to find out the fact from the myth and to act accordingly. Seek as much advice as you can before undertaking any king of herbal acne cure.

Acne does not necessarily appear on the face, this is simply the most noticeable place that the acne stands out. Body acne is a particularly common occurrence and can be extremely irritating. The normal acne cream and lotion treatments for mild to moderate types of acne is not appropriate for body acne for the simple reason that there is usually just too much of it for the small amounts of cream you get in a tube.

The answer is to use an acne body wash to treat light or moderate acne. For more severe types of body acne your doctor might recommend more aggressive types of topical treatments.

Body acne can form as a result of any number of reasons including hormones and stress. You may get acne on your body from a build up of perspiration of from clothes that continually touch or rub a certain area that is prone to the pores becoming clogged. An acne body wash will assist in unblocking the pores in the skin and will help to prevent bacteria from growing in those areas.

The skin on your body is generally thicker and tougher than on your face and so the treatment of a body wash will be suitable for the entire body as opposed to simply targeting the individual acne spots. An acne body wash is different to a normal body was in that it will contain an active ingredient that has been approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of acne.

Acne body wash may contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that will remove dead skin cells and clean out clogged skin pores. It will help to prevent inflammation of the oil glands and hair follicles. You should be aware though that using a body wash with one of these active ingredients will certainly dry out your skin.

To prevent your skin from becoming too dry after using an acne body wash it is advisable to also treat your skin to a moisturizing cream. This will put some moisture back into you skin preventing an annoying constant itch or inflammation from the harshness of the active ingredients.

There are not a terrible lot of different types of acne body wash products on the market and they can be a little hit or miss as far as effectiveness goes. One of the better known names is Murad Acne Body Wash which uses salicylic acid in combination with a find date seed powder and triclosan to get deeply into the pores of the skin to exfoliate.

This is a product that will be more effective on people who are suffering from mild acne on the body. The skin pores on the body are larger than those on the face and so will need harder scrubbing and more diligent treatment to ensure they are completely cleaned out. The good news about using an acne body wash is that it only needs to be used two or three times per week for it to be effective.

In the fight against the more mild, but very irritating form of acne, there are a lot of different types of acne treatment gel products on the market. An acne gel is a topical treatment that is applied directly to the acne blemish, usually once a day, that works to dry out and kill the bacteria causing the spots.

Acne gel treatments come in a huge range of different available products, but no matter which one you choose they are all FDA regulated and must contain at least one FDA-approved active ingredient. There are only four active ingredients that have been approved by the FDA and they have been tested to give you a recommended amount that is safe and effective.

The four FDA-approved active ingredients for acne are: benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur and sulfur combined with resorcinol. These ingredients are the parts of these gels that do the work of drying the acne out. All of these chemicals by themselves can be quite harsh on the skin and should be used strictly as the directions that come with the package prescribe. If the product that you’re buying promises to treat “acne” then it must contain one of these four agents.

Acne gel treatments can be grouped into a collective description as over the counter (OTC) treatments. This is the kind of treatment that the majority of acne sufferers use. In fact, only around 25 per cent of people use prescription medication to control their acne. The rest, one would presume are either using these OTC treatments or a natural home made therapy.

As a brief example of what is available out there, here are three known acne treatment gels that are easy to find in stores today:

Natria Treatment Gel – this is a gel treatment that uses salicylic acid as the chief active ingredient. Along with the active ingredient is a whole list of skin care products to sooth the skin to balance the harsher effect of the salicylic acid. It’s a treatment that will slough off a layer of skin and unclog the blocked pores. The recommendation is that it is used morning and night and that a moisturizer be applied after the gel has been fully rubbed in and absorbed. You can buy a tube of Natria Treatment Gel for around $12.00 for a 1 fl. oz tube.

Glytone Acne Treatment Gel – this is another gel treatment that is effective for mild to moderate acne conditions. It contains a 10% level of benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. It’s a formulation that is made without oils and is lightweight, proclaiming that it is suitable for using on the most oily and acne-prone complexions. This is another treatment that will dry out the skin and the recommendation is that you start with only one application per day until the skin has become accustomed to its use before increasing gradually to two or three applications per day. This treatment costs around $18.00 for a 2 oz tube.

Murad Exfoliating Treatment Gel – as the name suggests this product will also remove a layer of dead skin. Some comments have been made that the gel will sting a little after it has been applied. This will be due to the fact that it contains hydrogen peroxide, retinol, glycolic and salicylic acid. SO, in other words this is a fairly aggressive type of acne treatment that will remove skin quickly, unclogging the pores and controlling future breakouts. You’ve got to be prepared that there will be some drying out of the skin with a product containing these ingredients. To buy Murad Exfoliating Treatment Gel it will cost you around $54.00 for a 3.4 fl. oz. bottle.

These three acne treatment gels are only a few of a wide range of OTC acne treatments that are available in stores and online. Remember, you’re looking for one of four FDA-approved active ingredients to be part of the list of the product’s ingredients. In general these treatments will feel a little harsh on your skin to begin with. This is due to the necessity to dry the acne out and clear out the clogged pores of your skin.

When talking about acne in general terms it is classified into the predominant lesion type that is visible, e.g. comedonal, papulopustular, nodular and cystic, as well as the severity such as mild, moderate and severe.

Nodular acne is different to other types of acne in that the pimples are much larger and more painful. It is a type of acne vulgaris in its most severe form. The nodules that give it its name appear as hard lumps beneath the skin’s surface. They are inflammatory lesions measuring 5mm or larger and they last from weeks to months. They are characterized by many nodules or cysts-inflammatory lesions filled with pus and lodged deep within the skin.

In the past this type of acne was simply termed “cystic acne” but this has more recently been changed to be known more correctly as “severe nodular acne”.

Acne conglobata is a severe, suppurative form of nodular acne that is most often experienced by males. It is uncommon but it is characterized by burrowing and interconnecting abscesses and irregular scars. The comedones usually occur in groups of 2 or 3 and cysts appear and then reappear after drainage. They are usually found on the back, chest, shoulders, buttocks and the face.

Treating Nodular Acne

Treatment of nodular acne is done with a course of drugs, an isotretinoin based medication such as Accutane. Accutane is considered a major breakthrough in the treatment of severe nodular acne which is resistant to standard acne treatment, including oral antibiotics. It has been found to have the potential to permanently clear acne after a course of treatment which is usually 5 months in duration.

The use of isotretinoin should only be used after all other avenues of acne treatment have been exhausted because it does come with side-effects. It must not be used by women who are able to bear children or during pregnancy because it causes birth defects in humans.

Dealing with nodular acne is a delicate matter because of the great risk of permanent scarring being the result.

There always seems to be some new wonder cure for nodular acne. Because it is such a painful condition that takes a long time to overcome and because the results are long lasting, alternative treatments to the existing ones are sought. With any home remedy or unproven concoction it is highly advisable to talk to your medical practitioner about it first. They will probably have heard of all the myths and theories and are in a position to explain the possible dangers with trying something new.

Acne present on the chin represents a part of the face that makes up the major trouble spot known as the “T-zone”, the forehead, nose and chin, which is the area responsible for the largest, most active oil glands. Although it is part of the face that is a regular location of acne, in general it is an area that responds well to treatment.

A group of people who often find that they get recurring outbreaks of acne on the chin are women who are menstruating or who are pregnant. This is obviously due to the fluctuation in hormones in the body.

Some of the causes of acne, including chin acne, have been found by researchers to attributed to the presence of toxins in the body, hormonal changes, stress, a diet that is unbalanced.

Another common reason that acne forms around the chin is through friction contact from such outside influences such as face masks or from repeatedly resting the chin on objects. The repeated contact with the face can cause the pores in the skin to become clogged or blocked and the result is an acne outbreak. Picking up bacteria by resting the receiver of a phone against your chin is also a possible cause and is certainly something to avoid if you are in the group who is more susceptible to chin acne.

Treatment of Chin Acne

Acne of the chin can be treated in a number of ways. Not all of them need necessarily be medication treatments and not all of these treatments will be effective for everyone.

A simple start to treating your chin acne is to start drinking plenty of water combined with more regular face washing .

Accutane is a treatment that has had effective results with chin acne. There is one advisory to add for women who are thinking about using it and that is for women who are pregnant who should avoid using it. Similarly, diabetics should also avoid using it.

Oxy 10 is also effective for chin acne, starting off with an application of a mild moisturizer before applying the Oxy 10. This is an antibiotic cream that will be very effective against a simplex acne on the chin.

A change of diet will also help to improve the chances of fighting your chin acne. An increase in the fruit and vegetables you consume will help for more healthy skin.

Using sulfur soap to wash your face with each day will also help to dry the skin out plus remove any build up of dead skin cells. With this daily treatment your skin can quickly improve once the pores have become unblocked.

For men, the added problem of shaving will become an issue, particular if the acne is tending towards the serious side. One of the vital warnings when it comes to acne is to never pick it for fear that the resulting scars will be permanent. Continually knocking the tops off your chin acne with the razor will not be good for it and could lead to infections if the lesions are worsened.

As with most other acne in its simplest form, regular treatment and dietary changes will go a long way towards improving the condition of your skin. By following a regular treatment and perhaps after consulting your doctor if the condition is prolonged and doesn’t seem to be improving, there should be a noticeable improvement in the seriousness of your chin acne.

More serious forms of acne that may have taken up residence on your chin, such as cystic acne will require a more serious kind of treatment.

Among the many treatments that people try to help reduce acne or cure acne completely is glycolic acid. It is a face treatment product that is available in a number of forms such as a cream, cleanser, peel, face wash or a lotion. Certain glycolic acid products can be used as part of your acne treatment regimen to help remove the acne itself or the red marks of acne scars left on your face.

Glycolic Acid Peel

One of the more confronting types of treatment using glycolic acid for acne removal is a glycolic acid peel. Using a peel will burn or dissolve the top layer of skin to allow new skin underneath to take its place.

You can use a peel glycolic acid acne treatment if you are after a gradual treatment over a long period of time. The peels can either be done by professionals as a program or you can buy over the counter treatments. They are available in a variety of strengths so be careful, 10% strength will usually be plenty strong enough.

The benefits of the glycolic acid peel is that it will help reduce the signs of acne scars, dry out existing acne and clear up the conditions in which acne bacteria thrive. As well as helping with mild acne, glycolic acid peel also helps fades other spots and blemishes on the face such as freckles, wrinkles and age spots.

People report that their skin becomes smoother and works very well as an exfoliator of dead skin. The thing to remember with glycolic acid peels is that the noticeable results won’t start to happen until well into the program. It takes something like 10 to 12 peel sessions before results can be seen.

During the program it can become a little scary with the affected skin becoming itchy and red with some people reporting a burning, stinging sensation.

Glycolic Acid Face Wash

The active ingredient of glycolic acid in a glycolic acid face wash is extremely low and it is meant to be used as a gentle way to remove dead skin from the face. In fact, the level of glycolic acid in face washes is so low you wouldn’t use it as a means for removing acne. That being said, it is a great way to keep your skin clean and dry skin will quickly be removed. It will help to unblock clogged pores, reducing the chance for acne to form. Use glycolic acid face washes as part of a larger planned skin care program.

Glycolic Acid Acne Treatment

As an acne treatment, glycolic acid is not something that you would use and expect results if you have moderate to severe acne. In many cases when using glycolic acid for acne it is in products combined with salicylic acid. When used in this way the glycolic acid will break up the dead skin cells and then the salicylic acid will assist in the removal of the skin from the skin surface and will help to open up the pores of your skin.

Glycolic acid is an abrasive, corrosive chemical and so care should be taken when using it. The skin may feel dry and irritated after use and you will be very sensitive to sunlight until the skin has recovered. Using a concentration higher than the recommended 10% will lead to the skin becoming even more sensitive. High concentration glycolic acid treatments could leave your face looking as though it has been badly sunburned.
